It’s July 1945 and the commander of the US Forces in the Hastings area wants to segregate his white and black troops to avoid any racial conflict between them. DCS Foyle has strong views on the subject and doesn’t hesitate to remind everyone just what they were fighting for during the war. In this environment, Mandy Dean is living at the local guest house having been thrown out by her mother after giving birth to a baby girl fathered by an African-American GI, Gabe Kelly. Sam is working at the guest house owned by her friend Adam Wainwright and tries to support Mandy. Gabe for his part wants to marry the girl and she him. When Mandy is found dead, DCS Foyle has a murder to investigate with her former boyfriend, Tommy Duggan, and a racist Sergeant at the base, Calhoun, the most likely suspects. Meanwhile, Foyle has to deal with a number of robberies where some of the more prominent members of Hastings society are the victims.
